Understanding Mental Health, Trauma and Violence in Youth Settings

By Dr Lizzie Fitzmaurice - FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGIST

This course is suitable for organisations or individuals who work directly with young people. The course is best delivered over 2 days.

Delivered by Dr Lizzie, Adolescent Forensic Psychologist, this evidence-informed course explores the intersection between mental health, trauma and violence in the lives of young people — and what this means for practice within youth, education, and community settings.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of both the national landscape and their own service context, examining how mental health and trauma influence vulnerability, aggression, and behavioural presentation. Through reflective discussion and applied case examples, learners will explore the difference between normative adolescent development and behaviours that signal concern, risk, or unmet need.

The course equips professionals with practical skills to recognise, discuss, and respond to signs of emotional distress and violence, fostering a trauma-informed and psychologically-safe approach to working with young people. An optional extended module offers organisational consultation, supporting services to design proactive systems that promote wellbeing and resilience for both staff and young people.
